Need a new fence?

Neighbours often do not know they are liable to contribute an equal amount to the cost of building a dividing fence between their own and their neighbours property.

Before constructing a fence, discuss with your neighbour the type of fence, its cost and how you propose it will be built. These details should be in writing and the agreement signed by both parties. Two or three quotes should be supplied, and once your neighbour accepts The Proposal, he is bound to pay half the cost of the fences construction.

In older areas, if boundary pegs have been removed you may have to have the block surveyed. The surveyor’s fee should be paid in equal shares.

Check with council if your fence is to be higher than others in the area, forms part of a retaining wall or pool fence. Generally if the fence is 2m high or lower, no council approval is needed.

Gramline Steel Privacy Fencing is an easy do-it-yourself project. To work out how many panels are required, measure your fence line. Divide the number of metres by 2.37m (the panel length).

Depending on your site you’ll probably need a 50mmsq post at each end of the fence.
